Words you should never say to a hiring manager in an interviewWords you should never say to a hiring manager in an interviewWhat words should you never say when being interviewed for a job?I like a big sandbox. It reads dumber than it sounds. The Sandbox answer rarely fails to disappoint hiring managers. I know because Ive used that little gem a lot.It usually bombs. To me, it means, I have vision I have ideas I think of cool stuff that makes people like workTo them, it means, He has vision. He has ideas. Hes going to cost us money. The Sandbox answer kills most interviews. Why? Because everyone between you and the CEO doesnt want your vision or ideas. That stuff costs money. They want you to work on their vision and their ideas. They dont need yours. So why do I still use it?Because the Sandbox answer, for me, is a great way to weed out the places Id be miserable at. Address Your Accounting Technology Needs

Address Your Accounting Technology NeedsAddress Your Accounting Technology NeedsIts no secret accounting technology is revolutionizing the business world with the strategic insights and improved risk management it provides. The problem with revolutions, though, is that they move quickly, and heads may be on the figurative chopping block if accounting and finance executives dont keep up with the changes - and challenges - of big data. One big challenge is the competition for big data experts. A Robert Half report, Building an Accounting and Finance Team to Capitalize on the Promise of Big Data, includes comments from financial executives and managers about the hard skills needed for their companies to thrive.GET THE BIG DATA REPORTThe report identifies a definite talent eu-agrarpolitik between factors important for success and the skills possessed by your team in the following areasIdentifying key data trendsData mining and extractionOperational analysisStatistical modeling and data analysisTechnological acumenAlthough the concept of big data has been around for as long as weve had the ability to gather large amounts of information, businesses have only recently had the tools and computing power to glean useful knowledge from enormous, complex data sets. And because this advantage is so new, the supply of financial professionals with the technical expertise to manage big data processes has not kept up with demand. Here are four ways your company can close the talent gap when it comes to accounting technology skills1. Refine college recruitmentMost college accounting programs today teach data analytics and big data skills. The problem, though, is that educational institutions are also playing catch-up with emerging technology. Consider contacting universities to find out exactly what their accounting departments are teaching before you target their seniors and recent graduates.2. Provide access to data-related educationCollege recruitment is a key approach to get ting the talent you need, but it cant do it all. Big data training for existing staff is an excellent investment for employees and employers. Groups like Microsoft Virtual Academy and Coursera offer online classes on big data, including how to organize, analyze and interpret it using a variety of programming frameworks.Theres not yet a standard certification just for this emerging field, but Certified Analytics Professional offers the CAP credential for related skills, such as how to frame problems, extract data and build models. Also, several universities offer a masters degree in information and data science. Designed for working professionals, these are online programs with an on-campus immersion component.3. Arrange accounting technology training internallyYour companys IT department is likely already familiar with the tools and infrastructure needed to extract meaningful information from big data. However, tech specialists dont have the financial or modeling acumen to identify meaningful trends. The IT team can help by offering your existing staff cross-training, showing them how to store, manage, access and use data.4. Attend industry eventsSeveral groups hold conferences and summits that focus on accounting technology and big data. Because so many fields want to understand and harness the power of big data applications, industry events groe nachfrage the gamut from marketing and finance to geoscience and biomedicine. While online courses and programs are valuable, there is nothing like sitting in on live presentations, asking questions of industry experts and networking with likeminded professionals. Here are some of the top events in the field of big dataeMetrics Summit - marketing analyticsData Summit - for IT and business professionalsPredictive Analytics World - separate conferences focusing on business, financial, healthcare or governmentBig Data Innovation Summit - cross-industryIEEE International Conference on Big Data - research-focused even t in the fields of engineering, physical and social science, and computer science, with a separate industrial trackBig data is ubiquitous, but the revolution is still in its infancy. Organizations have suddenly shifted from a state of data scarcity to data abundance, and most people are still trying to work out how to exploit analytics to give them a competitive edge. So now is a great time to invest in the accounting technology and people to make sense of this flood of information. If you need help with that, just let us know.

How much you must earn to afford a house in the largest cities

How much you must earn to afford a house in the largest citiesHow much you must earn to afford a house in the largest citiesBuying a home used to be part of the American dream. It lets you build equity over the years, gives you a significant financial asset, and provides a pride of ownership or investment in the surrounding community. The problem is that in some cities, workers must earn hundreds of thousands of dollars to afford an average-sized home.We found the numbers behind our latest map from HSH.com, one of the largest publishers of consumer and mortgage information in the country. HSH focused on the 50 fruchtwein populous metro areas in the country, and figured out the price of the median home for sale. They then calculated monthly principal, interest, property tax and insurance payments buyers have to pay for a 30-year fixed rate mortgage. To keep things simple, they determined what salary would be needed to afford each home using the 28 percent front-end debt ratio, meaning the total housing payment could not make up more than 28% of gross income. They also assumed a 20% down payment. We mapped the resulting needed annual salary as a spike on a geographic outline for the metro area.Top 10 cities where you need to earn the most to afford a median-priced house1. San Jose, CA $274,6232. San Francisco, CA $213,7273. San Diego, CA $130,9864. Los Angeles, CA $114,9085. Boston, MA $109,4116. Seattle, WA $109,2757. New York City, NY $103,2358. Washington, DC $96,1449. Denver, CO $93,26310. Portland, OR $85,369Our map reveals three tiers in annual income workers need to earn to afford a median home. First, the West Coast stands out as by far the most expensive market in the country, with the top 4 markets in California alone. San Jose, CA is easily the most expensive workers need to make well over a quarter million dollars to afford a median-priced home. San Francisco is not far behind at $213,727, followed by Sa Diego much further down at $130,986. These numb ers indicate the extent to which Silicon Valley has created a massive increase in property values. The second tier of expensive locales is along the East Coast, led by the familiar hotspots of unaffordable housing like Boston, MA ($109,411), New York City, NY ($103,235) and Washington, DC ($96,144). But there are also other expensive metro areas located along the Atlantic Coast as well, such as Miami, FL ($78,337) and Providence, RI ($75,808). Its clearly expensive to live somewhere close to an ocean. The third and final tier of cities where workers dont need to earn 6-figure salaries stretches across the countrys midsection. Ranging from Minneapolis, MN ($63,962) down to New Orleans, LA ($49,249), there are several metro areas with plenty of relatively cheap housing. A couple of old Rust Belt cities round out the bottom of the list in Cleveland, OH ($39,730) and Pittsburgh, PA ($38,253).There is one more interesting and overarching trend worth noting on our map. Median household inco me across the US recently reached a record high of $61,400, which is great news for workers. The badeanstalt news is that isnt enough to afford a typical house in 25 out of the 50 cities on our map. Granted, workers in metro areas tend to make more than their rural counterparts, but there is no doubt a real concern about affordable housing in certain urban areas.Want to find out more about the true cost of living in the US? ASME Hosts Congressional Briefing Highlighting Advances in Bio...

ASME Hosts Congressional Briefing Highlighting Advances in Bio... ASME Hosts Congressional Briefing Highlighting Advances in Bio... ASME Hosts Congressional Briefing Highlighting Advances in BioengineeringJune 29, 2018 Dean Kamen, executive director of the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI)/BioFabUSA, was the keynote speaker at the ASME Congressional Briefing, Bioengineering A New Frontier in American Manufacturing, on June 14.ASME recently hosted a congressional briefing, Bioengineering A New Frontier in American Manufacturing, featuring keynote speaker Dean Kamen, executive director of the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI)/BioFabUSA, a Manufacturing USA institute focused on regenerative medicine. Kamen, who received the ASME Medal in 2007, designed several major innovative technologies in the bioengineering sector, including the first portable insulin pump, the iBot all-terrain wheelchair and the Segway.Kamen kicked off the briefing, which was held June 14 in the U.S. Capitol Building, with the analogy, science is a goldmine, engineering is how you get the gold out of the ground and make it valuable. He discussed the mission of ARMI, explaining that it filled a role nobody else was tackling by focusing on engineering and scale, rather than basic research. Kamen explained that the future of biomanufacturing is the manufacturing of organs such as kidneys to replace those no longer functioning, rather than chronically treating them. This will save the government a lot of money and have a correspondingly immeasurable impact on the cost of healthcare for all Americans.Looking to the future, Dean stated he hopes to turn Manchester, N.H. where ARMI is located, along with several other biomanufacturing and advanced manufacturing companies such as Kamens other company, DEKA Research and Development into an East Coast version of Silicon Valley for organ reproduction and to transition to a world where regenerative organs are as co mmon as vaccines. ASME President Said Jahanmir (right) introduces panelists Jennifer Hagan-Dier (left), director of the Tennessee Manufacturing Extension Partnership, and Michael Golway, president and CEO of Advanced Solutions Life Sciences, at the briefing on Capitol Hill.Following Kamens presentation, Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) provided remarks, expressing her excitement that the Department of Defense (DOD) played an integral part in helping ARMI get off the ground, further noting that DOD is a key player in advancing new technologies. The innovative new technologies ARMI is developing have enormous potential, including the ability to bring relief to patients on the organ donor list. These technologies also reinforce the major impact that science has on daily life and the need to continue supporting our science agencies. Sen. Shaheen also touched on the dearth of qualified scientists moving into the bioengineering field, explaining that the University of New Hampshire system i s closely engaged with ARMI, but more must be done to encourage young people to pursue bioengineering. In closing, she conceded that the current costs of higher education are a barrier to prospective students.Following the senators remarks, Michael Golway, president and CEO of Advanced Solutions Life Sciences, discussed some of the groundbreaking technology his company is working on. Advanced Solutions is a biomanufacturing company with locations all over the United States, including their newest location with ARMI in Manchester, N.H. He explained that the work of Advanced Solutions is a very small piece of the big puzzle Kamen discussed in his keynote address. Golway shared several videos with the audience of the BioAssemblyBot (BABs), a 3D bioassembly technology platform that is also the worlds first human tissue printer. He explained that BABs moves like an arm and can also control workflow. Additional tools can also be attached to the arm for further functional variation. In add ition to BABs, Advanced Solutions is working on Patented Angiomics, a technology they have developed in conjunction with ARMI that harvests blood vessels from fat cell tissues, which then undergoes new angiogenesis. (Left to right) ASME Executive Director Thomas Costabile, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and ASME President Said Jahanmir at the June 14th briefing. Sen. Shaheen was one of the speakers at the event.Rounding out the speaker panel was Jennifer Hagan-Dier, director of the Tennessee Manufacturing Extension Partnership. She explained that the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) is a public-private partnership with centers in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. It is dedicated to providing small and medium-sized manufacturers with the support they need to reduce costs, improve efficiencies, create new products and find new markets. The program is dedicated to bolstering the state of American manufacturing, as the investment in research and development from a manufacturi ng perspective has decreased significantly. Hagan-Dier further noted that what is frequently happening now in manufacturing is that products are being invented by American manufacturers, but the actual manufacturing is taking place elsewhere. One of the core missions of the MEP is to change this and revert to an Invent Here, Manufacture Here model once more. For more information on the work of ARMI, visit https//www.armiusa.org. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the wertzuwachs of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated Genera l Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscrap er and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

If you get less than 8 hours of sleep, your day will be terrible

If you get less than 8 hours of sleep, your day will be terribleIf you get less than 8 hours of sleep, your day will be terribleI am writing this story sleep-deprived on six hours of sleep, with my cognitive functions significantly impaired. Likely, you are reading this sleep-deprived too, because multiple studies have confirmed that our adult brainsneed exactly eight hours of sleep and its pretty hard to get that regularly if you have any type of responsibility. The drumbeat from scientific studies is this 8 hours. 8 hours. 8 hours. Any less and youre not functioning well, even if you fool yourself that you are.Even seven hours of sleep, which is luxury not afforded to many in the medical or journalism worlds of overnights and shifts, will totenstill negatively affect your brain. Losing less than an hour of sleep from the prescribed eight hours made participants in a Walter Reed study three times more likely to doze off than participants who got eight hours of sleep. In a similar two- week study, the participants who only slept six hours were acting as if they were under total sleep deprivation after only 10 days of six-hour sleep.10 days. The researchers measured participants cognitive functions after their sleep. The ones who got less than eight hours of sleep were slower to respond, couldnt interpret words as well, and were dozing off more. After one sleepless night, the participants in the zero-sleep group were acting like they were legally drunk. You cant game sleepTheres no way to beat the sleep system. Sleep is superior. Those same researchers also found that we cant catch up on sleep on the weekends. People who slept less than eight hours during the week did not regain their baseline levels of cognitive function after a weekend of recommended sleep.Worse, we dont even recognize when we are sleep-deprived. People in the six-hour sleep group thought they did great on the cognitive function tests, but they performedsignificantly worse than the eight-hour sleep group. But naps do helpIf you dont get those eight hours of beauty rest, theres still one other option to help an afternoon siesta.University of Pennsylvania researchers found that a one-hour nap after lunch improved 3,000 elderly seniorsoverall cognition. They could recall tasks better and solve more math problems. Theres even a power nap wheel created by sleep researchers that determines when is the best time to take a nap based on when you woke up.It can be hard in our busy lives to make time for sleep, but study after study confirms that we need to prioritize zzzsto be our most productive selves. And these sleep studies suggest that the reason we are so busy with never-ending tasks might bebecause were too sleep-deprived and tired to be efficient. We need to make sleep a lifestyle, not a habit. One good nights sleep can make us feel like superheroes, but it doesnt mean we can pull an all-nighter the next night. A Reductress headline wryly satirized the sleep dilemmaas How Getting 8 Hours of Sleep Gave Me The Energy to Overcommit Again. After reading these studies, I, for one, am a changed woman. Im going to bed at 1130 p.m. tonight in penance after writing this.

Back to Work Turn Over a New Leaf

Back to Work Turn Over a New Leaf Back to Work Turn Over a New Leaf Something about the temperature dropping, leaves changing and backpacks bobbing up and down outside our windows makes us reminiscent for the start of school. While most of us havent had a first day of school in years (lets leid admit how many), the nostalgia remains strong. Why not harness that first-day-of-school feeling and use it to start fresh in your work life? Whether youre beginning a job search or simply looking to freshen up your current job, here are some tips on how to turn over a new leaf. The fall job searchYou know that kick of motivation you feel in the fall? Well, everybody else is feeling that as well. Competition for jobs is high this time of year, and companies hiring budgets are getting low. On the other hand, many companies are noticing how soon the end of the year is coming and hoping to use up their hiring budget before then. Whether fall is a good time to look for a new job or not could be arg ued a hundred different ways. Truthfully, that shouldnt be your focus. Use this back-to-work mentality to jump into your job search at full speed, and youll get a job regardless of seasonality. What steps should you take to start a job search? Glad you askedThe basic steps are as follows fix up your resume, network, and use job boards. Without a proper resume, the rest of your job search is pointless. Check out our Resume Writing Guide to help you optimize yours.Follow these easy steps to fix up your resume.Once your resume is perfect, you should focus your efforts on networking. When we say networking, were talking about two different kinds networking in person and networking on social media. You should be doing both. Attend local events or seminars in your field and reach out to former coworkers or mentors to meet for coffee. When networking online, LinkedIn should be your best friend. Take advantage of LinkedIn groups, and consider using Facebook and Twitter to increase your soci al media networking output.Think of job boards as the friend you call when your best friend is on vacation. LinkedIn is your best friend, but job boards are a close second. Research job boards and pick out two or three that you prefer. Check in on those job boardslike every good friend shoulda few times every week to see if any new jobs catch your eye. Each time you apply for a new job, customize your resume for ATS.Freshen up your work lifeWhat about those of you who love your job but also love fall? Jobscan can help you take advantage of starting fresh as well. After all, loving your job does not mean you dont get bored from time to time (or everyday). To figure out how you should start fresh, break down your daily schedule.Ask yourself, what are a few of the things I love about my daily schedule? Those are the things you should leave alone. Then ask the inverse, what are a few of the things I dont love about my daily schedule? Can any of those tasks be delegated to someone else o r removed completely? If not, move your schedule around. One of the hardest parts about having the same job for a long time is the monotony that can ensue. If you normally do a certain task that you dont like in the morning, change it to the afternoon. Just that tiny change in habit can breathe fresh air into your daily routine.Networking is often associated with finding a new job. However, networking can be useful to those who are happy with their current jobs as well. One way to improve our work life is to learn mora about the field you work in. By networking with other people in your field, both online and in person, you will pick up new knowledge and be even better at what you do. Networking is also great for building up your client base, meeting people who could join your team, developing side projects and preparing for a future job search. All of these aspects will make you happier in your day-to-day work life. The infographic below shows the steps of in-person networking. One thing is for sure, whether you are searching for a new job or sticking with your current job, the inspiration brought on by the crisp fall air should not go to waste. Take charge of your work life the way you used to take charge of the first day of schoolwith positivity, excitement, and high hopes for the year ahead.

However, working with a personal blog ca n give you a significant amount of experience in a variety of desirable skills. Not only will you learn basic computer literacy, but youll also dip your toes into the industries of website design, copywriting, blogging, content marketing, social media, and community management.I started my blog for fun in 2011, eventually launching a successful eBook called Life After Teachingand creating a business for myself as a freelance writer and entrepreneur (a career I didnt know existed when I welches a classroom teacher in 2008). Your final stop might not be full-time blogger, but along the way youll learn more about your subject of interest (the topic of your blog) and how to apply those myriad skills to help you achieve your goals on the job.Take a testWhile your options for testing into a career are more limited, there are quite a few jobs that will allow you to tap into your current experience and add on to it in the form of a certification. These certifications can cost as much as hun dreds of dollars, but might be worthwhile if it allows you to skip the ultra-expensive new degree. Project Management Professional(PMP) makes you more competitive as a project manager for small and large companies. Prerequisites including hours leading and directing projects as well as project management education often apply. International Coach Federation(ICF) is a global community of professional trained coaches. While you dont need this certification to start your own business, it can help you establish credibility and get up to speed on best practices for coaches and consultants. Certified Financial Planners(CFP) help individuals and families get control of their finances through 11 coaching. Believe it or not, you dont have to have an extensive background in finance (or a finance degree) to receive this certification. Instead, this course focuses on communication and counseling skills as well as sound financial basics that youll learn as you complete the certification. CompTIA Information Technology Industry Associationis a certifying body that oversees entry-level Information Technology tafelgeschirr providers. You can learn more about computers one course at a time, eventually setting yourself up for a career with computer networks, security, or maintenance.Stay on scheduleYour new career is a short few steps away, but only if youre persistent. Plan your year in advance and divide your work up into quarters. Take the first part of the year to assess your skills and interests and read about things you might like to do. Then take the second quarter to choose an activity that will propel you into your career (starting the blog, choose the tests to take and start studying for them). Take the third quarter to network with like-minded professionals in person and on LinkedIn. Take the final quarter to apply for jobs and network with human resources professionals (or mastermind groups, if you plan to consult or freelance) to identify the job you want. Dont le t the opportunity for a better career pass you by. Get motivated and make a plan with these low-cost career transition ideas.

What Not to Wear to an Interview

What Not to Wear to an Interview What Not to Wear to an Interview While what you wear to a job interview matters the most, its also important to consider what you shouldnt wear if you want to make the best impression. When you are dressing for a job interview,  how you present yourself counts. Your image is the first thing a potential employer is going to notice about you before you even have a chance to say a word or shake a hand. In order to make a good first impression, you should dress appropriately  and separate your social image from your professional presence. Even if youre interviewing at a start-up with a very casual workplace, its important not to dress it down too much.   Your attire should either match or exceed the type and quality of attire worn by your interviewers. What Not to Wear to a Job Interview There are a few common-sense items on this list, along with others that you might not have thought of. Wearing any of the following items could give the impression that you dont take pride in your appearance, or that you dont respect the company and interviewer. Its best to avoid wearing the following: Flip-flops or sneakers.Underwear (bras, bra straps, briefs, boxers, etc.) that is visible to others. Avoid wearing any undergarments that show outside of your clothing, even if your bra straps match your top.Shorts.Jeans.Skirts that are too short.Pants that are too low-rise, too distressed, or too tight.Blouses that are too low-cut or too short. Your blouse should not show your cleavage or your belly. If wearing low-rise pants, make sure the top of your underwear, especially if its a thong-style garment, doesnt show above your pants waistline. Trendy vs. Classic Take note of how people dress in your target company or similar companies. Different industries have their own dress codes, and you could get away with more creative or trendy wardrobe choices in an advertising agency, while classic suits and conservative styles will go over well in a financial firm. Consider these points when you go shopping for your interview outfit: A classic interview suit or outfit appropriate for your career field or industry that will last for years is a better investment than the latest trendy attire that will only last a season.Your idea of trendy might not match the interviewers perspective on whats fashionable, so err on the side of dressing conservatively when you interview.Shop wisely:  Visit outlets, shop sales, shop online, and use coupons to get the most mileage out of your interview budget.Plan ahead:  If you have that one classic interview outfit n your closet, youll be prepared for an unexpected interview, regardless of when it occurs. Your Professional Presence When you show up for an interview, youre there to put your best foot forward, not to create a distraction. If you wear risque clothing, strong scent, too much body jewelry or clothing that shows off your tattoos, you risk having people form snap judgments that could prevent you from succeeding in the interview or landing the job. Here are a few things to look out for: Your social vs. professional presence:  What you wear off-the-job and socially doesnt have to be what you wear for interviewing or at work. In fact, your professional presence may be very different from your  personal presence, and thats fine. You can have a closet full of fun clothes and a wardrobe of work clothes.Perfume and cologne:  Your scent (even if you smell good) can be an issue. Some people say they wont hire anyone they can smell from across the room. Also, a scent is one of the strongest senses and your favorite perfume or cologne might coincidentally be the same scent the interviewers ex-girlfriend or ex-husband wore. That subliminal negative impact could squash your chances of getting a job offer. With any type of scent, less, or none, is better. Pantyhose: The question of whether women should wear pantyhose on a job interview creates a lot of discussions, and the answer is an overwhelming yes. Heres more on wearing pantyhose to work or to job interviews, including when its appropriate, and when you can go bare-legged.Tattoos and piercings:  Depending on where you are interviewing, you may want to consider covering your tattoos and taking out your rings. Although employers are loosening up about these, there are still companies that have policies which limit both. Once you get hired for a new job if youre not sure what to wear, ask the hiring manager before you start. You can also visit the workplace to see what the people coming in and out of the building are wearing. There is no better way to make a good impression than to show up for your first day dressed appropriately and ready to work.

A peek inside Googles new Tel Aviv offices

A peek inside Googles new Tel Aviv offices A peek inside Googles new Tel Aviv offices Google is famous for its beautiful offices designed for maximum comfort for its employees. Their new Tel Aviv offices are not an exception. In early 2013 Google opened its new office in Tel Aviv, Israel. They rent seven floors of a luxury Electra Tower in the center of a city. It is about 86,000 square feet (8,000 square meters). The office is used for sales, marketing, and engineering with overall 250 employees. These beautiful offices were designed by swiss design studio Camenzind Evolution in cooperation with Setter Architects and Studio Yaron Tal. Google has worked with Camenzind Evolution in the past, so they were most likely satisfied with their outputs. Camenzind Evolution idea was to define every single floor with a different theme. They came up with Culture Heritage, Friends Family, Joy Optimism, Energy Vitality, Innovation Hospitality, Dream Delight and Humor Fun. You can find here trees, picnic tables, surfboards and all kinds of other crazy, but beautiful design. You can see a clear separation between desk-based zones and creative zones. Desk-based zones are here for employees to get the work done. Creative zones are used for brainstorming and other creative tasks. The Google Tel Aviv offices have also received LEED Gold certification, which means that its scored the highest score for its environmentally friendly construction. These offices are made with highly renewable materials, certified wood and efficient energy performance. source: officesnapshots, businessinsider and gizmag.comDo you like this story? What to expect on the second and third interview

What to expect on the second and third interview What to expect on the second and third interview Understanding the typical schedule and purpose of each round can prepare you to face each and give you an advantage in the hiring process.  Before you hear the words, “You’re hired,” you will typically sit through three separate interview sessions … at least. You prepared for the first interview. So you’re prepared for the second and third interviews, right? Probably not, say human resources professionals. Why do they even require three or more interviews? Wouldn’t it be more productive for everyone to meet all the decision makers in a single session and avoid the duplicate trips and days off from your current job? Couldn’t they ask you every question in a single day?Hiring professionals structure interview schedules with specific intent and each round has a unique purpose, said several human resources managers who spoke to Ladders. Understanding the typical schedule and purpose of each round can help you prepare for each and hand you an advantage in the hiring process. We eding outThe first interview is strictly used to weed out candidates who stand out from those who simply looked good on paper ( resume ). Interviewers will try to ask questions to verify the claims made on a resume and the focus remains on matching the candidate to the basic job requirements - certifications, qualifications, presentation and salary. It’s a “high level chat,” said Mark Johnson, HR manager for the Americas at Serena Software in Redwood City, Calif. “This is where we are getting to know you,” Johnson said. “This is the phase where we say, ‘This is what we’re looking for,’ and ‘This is what we see on your resume that supports what we are looking for.’”It’s a screening process, said Gia Colosi, director of human resources, at eMeter in San Mateo, Calif., another software maker. “At this point we’re looking at whether you have the technical capability to do the work.”Layers of a cakeThe second interview is where an interviewer will begin to press for examples of specific experiences that support the candidate’s claims to be the person presented in their resume.“Think of it as layers of a cake,” said Marilyn Monarch, group director for HR consulting and services at Citrix Systems. “We’re trying to find out the applicant’s work history for the last five to seven years … If we’re talking a second interview we’ve got a solid candidate. They’ve moved beyond being a suspect to a prospect.”Monarch said the type of question she likes to ask in a second interview is to have the candidate speak about a recent incident where they identified an area that needed improvement in their last or current position, and then to walk her through how they went about getting it resolved.“Sometimes you get an impactful representation of what the candidate is about,” she said. “We’re listening for experience and how they present their story.”The second interview is also a time to ensure that the candidate underst ands the intricacies of the position, the work involved and the compensation, Johnson noted. “I have to calibrate my expectations and their experience with what the job requires,” Monarch said.Serena Software’s Johnson says one of the most important things for him in the interview process is honesty. “For candidates it’s really important to be honest,” he said. “Be very honest. Be clear about your abilities, do not overstate. We’re looking for instances where the applicant has done the things they claim. But if you can’t answer quickly or honestly it quickly becomes apparent in the interview process and causes it to break down.”Do your researchAnother key point for candidates returning for a second interview is that they know the company they are applying to.“Be very aware of who we are as a company - what we do, what our market space is and what the team you are joining does,” Johnson said.Robert Erzen, vice president of HR at Palo Alto Networks, a network security software provider, said, “It’s critical that they know something about us. My advice is to take some time to go onto LinkedIn so they can even find a name they can drop of somebody who works here - the name of a friend of a friend even.”Monarch says she likes to see that a candidate has done their homework on the company. “It pays to show that they are very interested in the company. They ought to know who we are, what we do and what’s the scope of our business. If they stumble or don’t know anything, that candidate’s chances may be limited.”Another tip from Monarch is that candidates study the company’s Web site. Most corporate Web sites are robust and have lots of information. If the company in question is public, the financials as well as information about the products and services are all available online. Moreover, it also pays to know the company’s competitive landscape, she said. “In the initial interview we look very simply at whether the pers on can make an immediate impact on our business,” Erzen said. “Do they have the chops to join our firm? So we look for that twinkle or that passion. And we definitely look for people who can come in and bring ideas.”The right fitMeanwhile, Johnson said when Serena asks a candidate in for a third interview it is to finalize their view of the person’s technical competence.“The final interview is to figure out if the candidate is the right fit,” he said. “And the final interview typically involves the hiring manager, someone from HR, and there can also be a team member and a higher level manager there.” Johnson says he looks for candidates who can effectively challenge the status quo. “Come with a little fire in the belly.Ӊ€œWe’re looking for candidates who want to make a contribution and not just plug along putting a widget in the exact spot every day,” Monarch said. “We also look for people who can work in ambiguity. Citrix requires a lot of collaborative w ork so those who can work in a team setting have better chances.”Of the HR professionals interviewed, Colosi was the only one who said they do four rounds of interviews. And the fourth is typically to meet the company’s CEO to get his approval. But by the fourth interview, “You’ve already got an offer.”Other tips? Avoid distractions, Erzen said. This means to silence your cell phone. And do not pull out a PowerPoint presentation unless you’re looking for a sales or marketing position. With most any other role, it’s overkill, the HR pros said.“It’s very typical in the industry and probably for most companies to have a phone interview first, rather than taking the candidate’s time to drive out to the site,” said Marilyn Monarch, group director for HR consulting and services at Citrix Systems.

Impact Through Knowledge Dissemination

Impact Through Knowledge Dissemination Impact Through Knowledge Dissemination Impact Through Knowledge Dissemination and Cooperation in the Community By Alaina G. Levine In the area around the city of Rourkela (INDIA), located in the northeast Indian State of Odisha, the school drop-out rate is considerably high, notes Naushita Sharma, a junior in mechanical engineering at the National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT Rourkela) and a past member-at-large of the universitys ASME section. Some boys tend to drop out of school in the10th grade due to economic reasons, and girls may leave as early as the 5th grade. Sharma and her fellow ASME members realized that this community problem had significant national economic and workforce impacts, and seized the opportunity to address this dilemma. Their elegant solution was Project SAHAYOG (STEM Augmentation and Holistic Advancement for YOuth: Gearing up for the future), (also from the Hindi word meaning cooperation), an outreach program and engineering conference which targeted young boys and girls was designed to educate their neighborhoods about the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education and careers. The team specifically reached out to people in the community who are underrepresented minorities in STEM, including members of the tribal community and those who are below the poverty line. Our aim was to attract young students into engineering research, and to provide information to help them understand what it is, says Udayan Singh, also a junior in ME. Funded in part by an ASME Diversity Action Grant, the year-long program was a complete success. Project SAHAYOG kicked off in the fall of 2015, ASME members visited schools and conducted surveys to identify the level of awareness the kids had of different topics and career paths in engineering, as well as parental pressures to pursue certain professional paths. One important piece of data gleaned from the survey was that 75% of the girls were in the position to be the first members of their family to go to college, says Singh. Based on the information they collected, the team then implemented an Activity Week in January 2016, in which the group of engineering students returned to the selected schools and presented a set of demonstrations and active-engagement activities for the children to learn how to solve engineering-related problems in team settings. A view of the audience The last phase of Project SAHAYOG (wherein the DAG funding from ASME was utilized) consisted of integrating a program into the schools and introducing a conference held at the university. Over a three day weekend (March 2016), the section hosted the National Workshop on Engineering for the Future. At this event, 166 students (including 84 girls), primarily 12-19 years old from 13 regional schools and two diploma colleges (similar to community colleges in the US) attended presentations and demonstrations by engineering professors and ASME section members, and toured three major departmental laboratories that house research in automation, cryogenics and internal combustion engine dynamics. Almost, fifty-percent (50%) of the talks were on mechanical engineering research topics, while the remaining spanned the scholarship of STEM, including discussions on breakthroughs in electrical, civil, and energy engineering. The conference was inaugurated by Professor B.B. Bhattacharya, former Director of the Indian School of Mines, who spoke about the Indian expedition to Antarctica. The Director of NIT Rourkela, Professor S.K. Sarangi, discussed his research on cryogenics, while Professor Suman Chakraborty, an ASME Fellow, talked about his ground-breaking research in microfluidics and microfabrication. Another keynote speaker Dr. B.P. Singh, Chief Scientist at a leading national laboratory in India, explained his recent work on grapheme. NIT Rourkelas faculty members also spoke about breakthroughs in wireless communications, robotics, structural engineering and automotive engineering. Special sessions were devoted to being successful in college and engineering careers, and includ ed presentations by NIT Rourkela students, notes Sharma, who served as the convener for the conference. In the valedictory speech, Sarangi encouraged the kids to focus on the societal and industrial aspects of engineering to improve peoples lives. A view of the dias during the valedictory session. Prof. Suman Chakraborty, F-ASME, Chief Guest, Prof. S.K. Sarangi, Director, NIT Rourkela and Prof. K.C. Pati, Dean (S.W.), NIT Rourkela can be seen sitting as Naushita Sharma thanks the guests and student delegates for the workshop At the conclusion of the meeting, another survey was taken, in which the kids were asked if they would prefer to study STEM for a career in engineering. A resounding 95.2% of respondents answered in the affirmative. There were many lessons for the ME students who organized the affair. As the convener, Sharma gained prized expertise in project planning and execution, time management, and communications. Being able to head this workshop, I learned I could lead, she says. And this gives me an edge in my career. Similarly, Singh shares how the meeting involved social engineering, in which he and his colleagues truly sharpened their abilities to lead they had to ensure the kids paid attention, knew where to go next, and were gaining value from the experience. I have a newfound respect for professors leading the classroom, he says with a laugh. The team members were also able to hone their crisis management skills. While making the last minute review of the facilities, we realized that the auditorium did not have microphones or a projector, says Sharma. But there wasnt staff to assist, because the section had purposely set the event on a holiday weekend so the room space would be available. The team sprang into action and everyone rallied to find and procure the equipment. And when we started at 9am, no one knew anything had been wrong, says Singh. Section leaders also learned to negotiate, when they needed to quickly arrange for a tea break for the attendees and had to convince the skeleton crew on campus to help them with this enterprise. Looking back on the exciting year of outreach, the team is both proud of their accomplishments and introspective of their impact. Engineering and research is something we are meant to do, but in a developing country like ours, it is a major responsibility to reach out to kids who have less access to information about how to pursue engineering careers, says Singh, who has published letters to the editor about the state of educational development in India and plans to go to graduate school in ME. There is a responsibility and an aspirational aspect of it and that makes it the most important thing. Sharma, who presented on their project at WE India, the inaugural Society of Women Engineers conference in the nation and also aims to pursue a PhD in ME, notes that the influence that this project has on her community is long-lasting and empowering for everyone involved. After the event, we met with a class of students who had attended, and both the kids and later even a parent asked when we were going to organize this again, says Sharma. This means everything to her because it clarified Project SAHAYOGs goals and results: Knowledge makes a difference. Fighting Cancer as a Mechanical Disease

Fighting Cancer as a Mechanical Disease Fighting Cancer as a Mechanical Disease Cancers are typically categorized by site of origin, such as brain, breast, and lung. Molecular medicine has revealed, however, that cancers are best identified by presence of biological molecules (such as proteins) in cells, on cell surfaces, and in bodily fluids. Moreover, mechanical engineering and engineering mechanics at the nanoscale is aiding early and accurate oncological diagnosis and treatment. For instance, structural mechanics has entered cancer diagnostics. Arrays of micromachined cantilever beams, dotted with antibody molecules that link to specific antigens or conjugate molecules, deflect and change their resonant frequencies when the antibodies bind to the antigen proteins of cancer markers. Moreover, solid and fluid mechanics have entered cancer therapy. Cancers and the surrounding tissues in the cancer microenvironment generally develop internal hydrostatic pressure distributions that oppose the transport of therapeutic drugs from the blood stream into the cancer, diminishing the efficacy of treatment. New therapeutic approaches are being developed to overcome the pressure gauntlets. Anticancer therapy may soon be carried out using highly designed, multi-stage nanoscale particles. These particles would home in on tumors by seeking out cells that possess mechanical properties unique to cancers. Our own laboratories in Berkeley, Ohio State, and now in Houston have pioneered understanding of nanofluidicsmass transport inside nanopores and nanochannels. Nanochannel systems in capsules can be implanted in the body to release anticancer drugs either at a controlled constant rate, or at a time-variable rate according to a preprogrammed profile. The ultimate goal is a self-regulated system comprising on-board sensors, intelligence, and the release actuatorsessentially, a biomimetic, mechanically engineered nanogland that releases drugs only when needed, and at a required small local concentration (rather than flooding the body). Thus, insight into a deep connection between mechanics and cancer has recently emerged. Since the discovery of simple machines, one of the fundamental concerns of mechanics is the transport of mass. If we use the word mechanical in this sense (rather than in the medical sense of relating to mechanisms of biological action), then I can make a radical and potentially revolutionary statement: Cancer is a disease of mass transport dysregulation. Simply Put, Cancer is a Mechanical Disease What makes a cancer a cancer? About ten years ago Douglas Hanahan, now at the University of California, San Francisco, and Robert A. Weinberg at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, identified six major hallmarks of cancer now widely accepted. The first hallmark is tissue invasion and metastasis. A malignant disease is one that invades the surrounding tissue. Metastasis is the process of disseminating cancer deposits distant from the site of origin. Both tissue invasion and metastasis are mechanical aspects, pertaining to the motion and transport of organized mass units, the biological cancer cells. The second hallmark is angiogenesis: the generation of new blood vessels to feed cancer growth, profoundly changing the dynamics of mass transport at the tissue level. Without angiogenesis, cancer would be largely localized, and therefore generally curable. The four remaining hallmarksinsensitivity to anti-growth signals, the ability of cancer cells to excite their own population growth, resistance to preprogrammed cell death (apoptosis), and limitless cell replication potentialall depend on how signals are transported within cells and between cells. Unlike human signals, which are directed from point to point, biological signals are carried by molecules that are released into the general environment inside or outside of the originating cell, or shed in the blood stream. Although they are not directional, they know when they get to their intended location, because they have molecular components that dock with high lock-and-key specificity to target molecular counterparts. This docking in itself is the message transmission: it may encode a request to enhance cell proliferation, or resist preprogrammed death, or some other activity. Thus, molecular signaling is really a mass transport phenomenon. And cancer is emerging as a disease of mass transport dysregulation, from the molecular to the cellular, to the tissue, organ, and organism levels. To use an expression familiar to mechanical engineers, cancer can be viewed as a multi-scale mechanics problem in mass transport. A new generation of nanotech therapies are fighting cancer by overcoming biological barriers. Lipid-based nanoparticles, or liposomes, are effective because angiogenic blood vessels supplying tumors are leaky and permeable to nanoparticles, while normal vasculature is not. Thus, nanoparticle formulations of drugs concentrate in tumor lesions, reducing dispersion in healthy parts of the body and yielding lower adverse side effects. Any drugnano or conventionalinjected into the general circulation of a cancer patient must overcome all biobarriers in sequence to be able to discharge its therapeutic effect on the target lesions. Thus, a new field is emerging, termed transport oncophysics, that focuses on understanding the mass transport properties and time dynamics of evolution of biological barriers. The tools of the mechanical engineer are suited for understanding and defeating this insidious foe. [Adapted from Infernal Mechanisms by Mauro Ferrari,Professor and Chairman, Department of Nanomedicine and Biomedical Engineering, University of Texas Health Science Center, for Mechanical Engineering, March 2010.] Cancer is a disease of mass transport dysregulation.
